SEBASTIAN CHIRONI
LITO
ceramic structure, paper mache, spray paint, glitter
11” x 5” x 5”
DESCRIPTION
LITO is a repurposed ceramic angel statue that has been spray painted
bright pink, adorned with glitter, holding a paper mache star. Originally a gift
from the artist’s mother, the statue has been graffitied pink to question cultural
gender norms. This particular ceramic angel represents religious Latino
culture and the maximalist decorative style of many Latino households. The
bright, stereotypically feminine pink and glitter grab attention, warping our
view of the angel slightly. The mached star is a little deformed, but very
preciously held by an angel. Boys don’t need to perform as macho in order
to have innate value, or to be a precious star.
