Samantha Vacca
An Ode to James Patrick
gouache and colored pencil on paper, twine, clothes pins
52” x 21”

DESCRIPTION
An Ode to James Patrick is a series of delicately drawn, cut-out
clothing made using gouache and colored pencils over colored paper. On
the clothesline, we see the work is in a cycle of everyday wear and wash.
The work illustrates the clothing worn by the artist’s younger brother in
his youth, exploring how clothing plays a vital role in our identity and how
the items an individual cherishes is significant in understanding them.
By depicting and sharing the favored objects, the work commemorates
the person we don’t see, but now appreciate.
