SAGE ZARGARI
The Silhouette
oil paint, ink, and Yupo
50” x 27”
DESCRIPTION
The Silhouette illustrates how clothes, especially undergarments, have
intensely gendered connotations that the wearer is expected to conform to.
This artwork challenges and disrupts these expectations, jumbling together
“masculine” and “feminine” silhouettes, to tear apart the ways that we might
attempt to discern the unseen wearer. The restrictive boundaries of gender
are further broken by this artwork through a disregard for its substrate, with
physical yarn cascading down and off of the paper. Scribbles of texture are
carved into the artwork as well, exposing the white of the paper underneath,
synchronous with the message of the artwork carving away and exposing
the absurdity of gendered clothing as a whole.
