ASHTON BURTON
Threaded Roots
conte on toned paper
19.75” X 27.5”

DESCRIPTION
Threaded Roots highlights the skills, experiences, and craftsmanship of
clothing and fashion created by Black designers. Influenced by movements
such as the Harlem Renaissance, fashion around the globe reflects the
ideas and creations of Black American design, specifically Dapper Dan.
Celebrations and traditions continue to thrive in garment design despite the
displacement of African peoples, and such clothing is worn with pride and
delegation. The intimacy of passing on tradition through generations and
wearing culture proudly persists to this day. This piece depicts the care and
attention to detail that clothing makers have for their craft, as well as for
those who represent these memorializing garments.
