Angelina Patterson
Cowgirl
oil on canvas
20” x 30”

DESCRIPTION
Cowgirl is an allegory of resistance to conform. The romanticization
and hypermasculinity of the traditional cowboy myth is challenged with
queer subtext. While leather is a signifier of the American frontier, the subject
is reimagined and integrated with connotations of leather associated with
the queer community. The radiating body and pistol are held in confidence,
progressive in reluctance to the norm. There is no desire for approval from
the viewer’s gaze, as the stance remains obscured, with no clear identity
other than one found within the clothing.
