Will to Adorn
silver on gessoed plaster mould
3” x 2.5” x 2”

DESCRIPTION
Will to Adorn explores symbols of pride, creativity, and wealth through
the creation of Grillz. Historically, gold and silver were used by dentists
for low income Black and Latino people to protect teeth as an affordable
alternative. Now these are recovered as wealth and self-empowerment. The
structure of the Grillz hides little shapes for personalization, reinforcing this
act of reclamation. The work also takes inspiration from African American
traditions, exploring dress and body arts. The work takes these historical
tools and recognizes their growth and transformation becoming cultural
markers for one’s identity.
